SHAH ALAM, Nov 4 — Approximately 7,677 personnel from various agencies in Selangor have been placed on standby to face the 2026 northeast monsoon, which is expected to continue until March next year.

State executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said operational co-ordination, monitoring high-risk areas, and asset readiness must be maintained at optimum levels to ensure swift action throughout the season.

“The state government has mobilised all its resources, involving the State Disaster Management Unit (UPBN), local authorities, district offices, and relevant agencies, to ensure the highest level of preparedness throughout the 2026 northeast monsoon.

“This operational capacity is supported by 708 land vehicles, 247 water transport assets and various equipment, including 5,739 tents, 1,950 life jackets, 141 water pumps, 48 water jets, 192 chainsaws, and 20 drones for rescue operations, evacuations, and emergency assistance,” she said in a statement today.

Jamaliah added that Selangor's estimated annual rainfall for this year stands at 2,232mm, based on projections by the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS).

Of the estimated annual total, 1,460mm or 65 per cent had been recorded as of Sunday (November 1), while a further 268mm and 230mm of rainfall are expected in November and December, respectively.

“To strengthen preparedness against flood risks during this period, JPS has ensured that its assets and hydrological monitoring systems are maintained at optimum levels,” she said.

Selangor currently has 221 rainfall telemetry stations, 124 water-level telemetry stations, 140 warning sirens, and 72 Internet Protocol cameras to enable continuous monitoring of weather conditions and water levels.

“A total of 353 sluice gates and 161 fixed pumps are also available to support water-flow management and strengthen flood management operations throughout the state.

“To enhance response capabilities on the ground, 150 mobile pumps have also been made available, comprising 31 units owned by the federal government and 119 by the state government.

“Their deployment is supported by 15 personnel from the Mechanical and Electrical Management Division (BPME), five crane lorries, and five four-wheel-drive vehicles to ensure the pumps can be transported to locations where they are needed,” Jamaliah said.
