SHAH ALAM, Nov 4 — The Sungai Pelempas embankment will be raised by up to one metre as an immediate measure to prevent overflowing water from causing floods in Kampung Melayu Subang.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato' Izham Hashim said the measure will focus on low-lying sections of the riverbank identified as being at risk of overflowing during heavy rainfall.

The river's capacity is no longer sufficient to accommodate water flow during heavy rain, causing it to overflow into residential areas.

“In Kampung Melayu Subang, I have inspected the area and reviewed the reports. The water is actually overflowing along the riverbank, so we need to raise the embankment.

“Sections identified as being prone to overflowing and having low embankments will be raised by between 0.5 and one metre,” he told the media after the groundbreaking ceremony for the Selangor Water Management Authority's headquarters building today.

Izham added that the works are expected to cover several hundred metres of the riverbank, at an estimated cost of less than RM1 million, although the final amount will depend on further technical assessments.

The proposal will be presented at the State Executive Council meeting tomorrow for consideration and approval before physical works begin.

He emphasised that immediate measures must be implemented without waiting for Phase Two of the Sungai Buloh Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB), which is still in the early stages and will take several years to complete.

“We cannot afford to wait another four years. The long-term project will proceed, but we also have immediate and medium-term measures.

“The main quick-win measure is to raise the embankment,” Izham said.

In a related development, Izham said the state government has allocated an additional RM70 million to implement 255 immediate flood mitigation projects throughout Selangor.

This includes cleaning drainage systems, repairing embankments, and installing pumps in high-risk areas, among other things.
