SHAH ALAM, Nov 4 — Extreme rainfall, with precipitation exceeding 100mm, is expected to continue every afternoon across the Klang Valley until this weekend, increasing the risk of flash floods in affected areas.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said similar conditions were also expected in other states, including Perlis and Negeri Sembilan.

Extreme rainfall has been recorded since October 17, with 122mm of rain, followed by 130mm on October 21 and 118mm yesterday, each recorded over two to three hours.

“Normal rainfall is around 20mm, while heavy rainfall is around 50mm. The flash floods in Kampung Melayu Subang were caused by particularly heavy rain across the Klang Valley and the western states of Peninsular Malaysia, stretching from Perlis to Negeri Sembilan.

“This is due to the northeast monsoon, which began on October 29. Since then, we have observed relatively weak easterly winds blowing at speeds of between 10 and 20 kilometres per hour, accompanied by high levels of atmospheric moisture.

“When the air is humid, and the winds are relatively weak, conditions favour the formation of rain clouds accompanied by thunderstorms. This is what we are experiencing, and the situation is expected to persist every afternoon until this weekend,” he told Media Selangor.

In view of the situation, Hisham advised residents to remain vigilant and ensure that drains around their homes are not clogged with rubbish.

“Clear any blocked drainage systems, particularly those filled with sand or fallen leaves. Also, make sure important documents are kept in a safe place,” he said.

Yesterday, heavy rainfall of up to 116mm triggered flash floods in Kampung Melayu Subang, with water levels reportedly reaching one metre in residential areas.

The incident affected approximately 92 houses across four areas: Lorong Merbau (30 houses), Jalan Cengal (seven), Jalan Resak (five), and Jalan Jati (50).

After the incident, authorities opened two temporary relief centres (PPS) at Dewan Siantan and Dewan Resak Subang Perdana, each initially accommodating two families.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who visited flood victims at the PPS yesterday afternoon, ordered the acceleration of a flood mitigation project worth approximately RM500 million in Kampung Melayu Subang to address recurring floods in the area.

He said the project, involving both the federal and state governments, had already been approved, but its implementation needs to be expedited, particularly in areas that have experienced repeated flooding.

The project includes river widening, the construction of additional retention ponds, and other flood-mitigation works, including river dredging, for which contracts have already been approved.
