Northeast monsoon: KDEBWN freezes staff leave, boosts machinery

PETALING JAYA, Nov 1 — KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) is freezing leave for all staff next month to prepare for potential flooding during the Northeast Monsoon (MTL).

KDEBWM managing director Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir said the directive is intended to ensure the state’s disaster management preparedness and operations remain at an optimal level for the rest of the year.

Ramli added that KDEBWM has acquired new machinery, such as excavators, to enhance the efficiency of solid waste management operations, while also accelerating cleaning and maintenance work in public areas across the state.

“I have informed all officers that leave is frozen for the month of December. If leave is taken, it must be done on a rotational basis; not everyone can be off at once. Officers or staff must always be on duty to monitor the situation, especially in the event of a flood.

“We have also prepared cleaning equipment and water-jet pumps; our officers have finalised operational schedules, and we have established standby teams; everything is in place.

“Should any disaster occur, God willing, we will mobilise promptly," he told reporters after launching the KDEBWM Group Volleyball Championship in Ara Damansara here, today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) previously announced that the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) is expected to begin on October 27 and continue until March 2027, with three to five episodes of prolonged heavy rainfall forecast during the monsoon's initial phase.

For the upcoming Deepavali celebrations, Ramli urged the Hindu community to use the i-Clean Selangor application to request bulky waste collection during pre-Deepavali cleaning activities.

He said the initiative ensures that bulky waste is disposed of in an organised manner, preventing it from compromising the cleanliness of the surrounding area and helping to avoid illegal dumping.

"For the Hindu community, if you have bulky items to dispose of, please let us know via the i-Clean app; we will handle it free of charge," he said.

The i-Clean Selangor application, launched on July 1, 2016, was introduced to make it easier for residents to submit complaints regarding waste collection and public cleaning services directly via their smartphones.
