SHAH ALAM, Oct 24 — KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) plans to start building a waste-to-energy (WTE) plant near Rawang next year, following approval from the Selangor government.

KDEBWM managing director Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir said a site has been identified and all requirements, including assessments, have been completed, with an official announcement expected early next year.

“God willing, we are indeed planning to build one in northern Selangor, in Rawang... We will make an announcement early next year.

“The site has been secured and approved by the state government. We have also completed all requirements for the project, including studies and such. We are just waiting for the right time to make the announcement early next year,” he told Media Selangor.

Ramli added that the new plant would improve waste disposal efficiency by reducing the need for additional sites to accommodate landfills.

“Current operations require waste to be transported to areas approved by the state government, namely, Bukit Tagar, Tanjung Dua Belas, and Jeram, which also has a WTE plant. With the addition of WTE facilities, it makes work easier and reduces the government’s dependence on land that needs to be gazetted as landfills.

“This is a good development because we have succeeded in taking a step towards smarter, cleaner and more orderly waste disposal, while also considering the long-term future of the environment without damaging the land,” he said.

He also said the WTE facility would generate clean, green energy.

Previously, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj urged the state government to place greater emphasis on WTE technology as a modern and sustainable solution to waste management challenges.

His Royal Highness expressed the view after a visit to Amager Bakke, also known as CopenHill, a waste-powered heating and electricity generation facility in Denmark.

Selangor marked a milestone when Jeram 1, the state’s first WTE plant and the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, started operating on May 12. The facility can process up to 1,500 tonnes of solid waste daily to generate electricity, helping the state depend less on conventional landfills.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari previously said the Jeram 1 WTE plant demonstrates the Selangor government’s commitment to empowering sustainable waste management with modern technology.
