KLANG, Sept 26 — Cleanliness in traditional villages around Meru has improved following more organised rubbish collection, coupled with a decline in residents’ complaints about waste-related issues.
State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said inspections at several locations, including along Jalan Khamis, found that cleanliness conditions were significantly better than before.
KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) and the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) have been instructed to continue monitoring the area and strengthen engagement with residents who have yet to provide domestic waste bins.
“We need to engage and meet with them (residents) so that they understand their responsibility to provide domestic waste bins.
“This will allow rubbish to be disposed of according to schedule and in a more orderly manner, thereby ensuring that the villages become cleaner over time,” he said during a walkabout session in Kampung Meru recently.
Ng added that cooperation between MBDK and KDEBWM also helped reduce rubbish-related complaints in the area.
Meanwhile, he said this year's RM10 million allocation would increase by RM5 million to expand rubbish collection services to areas previously outside the service scope, particularly in 70 identified hotspots for illegal dumping.
KDEBWM's managing director Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir said the number of locations requiring clean-up action had increased from 132 to about 202 after four months of implementation since May.
The locations involved areas facing problems with bulky waste and illegal dumping.
“From the 132 traditional village areas, we found that about 70 more locations needed attention, bringing the total to around 202 locations with large amounts of waste, including bulky and illegally dumped waste. So we need to look at how this issue can be resolved within a year,” he said.
Ramli noted that collection operations have also been strengthened through the appointment of about 54 new contractors and the addition of nearly 295 waste bins.
These measures aim to ensure rubbish collection in traditional village areas can be carried out in a more orderly and consistent manner.
