SHAH ALAM, Oct 29 — Medium-term upgrades to Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari will start by June next year after utility lines are moved, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim, with the project set to be completed the same year.

He added that the RM3 million project includes upgrading the Alam Budiman intersection, adding lanes from Puncak Alam towards Shah Alam, and improving traffic lights, street lights and drains.

“Physical work will start next year. Why it’s late… because there are utility aspects (underground) that must be moved. It will usually take three months. If it goes quickly, we can (start) work quickly,” he told a press conference at his office in Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Building here today.

Also present was Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) director Shukri Ishak.

For the long term, Izham said the state government plans to build an overpass from Persiaran Jalan Paip to Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari to improve traffic flow, with RM128 million allocated under the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2). The project is set to start in 2027 and take three years to complete.

“A 5km (lane) will also be built until the Greenhill intersection to make the road a four-lane one.

“There is a proposal to build a fully elevated road here but it would cost RM1 billion… The cost is high but we will see whether the (initial) upgrade reduces congestion and (improves) user safety,” he explained.

Izham said the Greenhill Residences developer has been told to build extra lanes to reduce congestion along the road.

“Development conditions have been set for the developer to provide additional direct traffic lanes to Shah Alam at the Persiaran Pulau Lumut-B49 intersection, Alam Budiman and Puncak Alam at the Greenhill Residence intersection,” he added.

In a related development, Izham said 88 per cent of vehicles on Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari were found to be going above the 60kph speed limit outside peak hours, according to a road safety study.

He added that nine crashes, one fatal, have occurred along the road between March and this month.

“From the study, 73 per cent of car drivers, 15 per cent of motorcyclists and 12 per cent of lorry drivers travel above the speed limit… 88 per cent of vehicles break the speed limit outside peak hours. During peak hours, they can’t (speed) because it is congested.

“I hope users comply with signboards,” he advised.

An average of 80,300 vehicles travel along Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari per day on weekdays, with 64,000 on weekends.

On October 9, a crash involving a 10-tonne lorry and 11 cars occurred at the Alam Budiman traffic light intersection. Police said a urinalysis revealed the 51-year-old lorry driver tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

From 2023 to 2025, the Selangor government allocated RM4.2 million for upgrades along Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari, including by building more temporary lanes and installing new street lights.
