BANGI, Oct 24 — More students in Selangor will enjoy nutritious meals if the Selangor Nutrition (NutriSel) programme is extended to next year, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said the free meals programme has benefited 106,000 students so far with an allocation of RM12 million.
“The response has been very good. I am … considering that next year, we will try to conduct NutriSel the whole year for children in Selangor,” he said at the Madani Kita@Sungai Ramal event here today.
The event, held at SK Jalan Tiga Bandar Baru Bangi, was attended by more than 4,000 visitors including representatives from 34 agencies and strategic partners, offering various services such as welfare and health.
NutriSel, introduced under the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package (SREP), was launched in 932 schools on August 3. Students from households earning under RM2,000 receive one free meal on Mondays and Thursdays before classes start.
Amirudin said the state government is always thinking of the people’s needs and tries to make sure its various initiatives ease residents’ burdens.
He added that Selangor has allocated resources to help vulnerable groups, including through education programmes and aid for tertiary education students.
“We bear part of tuition and accommodation fees for 4,000 Selangor-born children who are furthering their studies at selected universities like Universiti Islam Selangor, Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC), and Universiti Selangor (UNISEL) to ease their financial burden,” he explained.
He also said the state government will continue studying the people’s needs and improve existing initiatives so aid can be channelled to target groups.
“Cooperation between government and people is important to ensure each programme introduced presents positive effects in the people’s lives,” Amirudin said.
