TELOK PANGLIMA GARANG, Oct 5 — Nearly 900,000 students across Selangor are expected to benefit from the implementation of Mega NutriSel, which will take place in mid-October.
Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the programme will be expanded to schools throughout the state as part of the state government’s efforts to strengthen nutritional support for students.
“Mega NutriSel will be implemented in mid-October at schools throughout Selangor, with around 900,000 students expected to benefit,” he said after the NutriSel programme at SMK Telok Panglima Garang today.
Amirudin added that the state government is reviewing the allocation and cost requirements in the budget to ensure the NutriSel programme could continue.
NutriSel currently benefits 104,640 pupils and students from households with incomes below RM2,000 at 932 schools across Selangor.
In Kuala Langat alone, 78 schools involving 8,616 students are benefiting from the programme.
He said that the state government has also received an additional RM2 million allocation to strengthen NutriSel's implementation, including increasing the supply of non-perishable food such as milk and bread.
“In Kuala Langat, 78 schools involving 8,616 students are benefiting from NutriSel, and we have also received an additional RM2 million on top of the existing allocation so that the programme can be further strengthened.
“We are adding food that can last longer, such as milk and bread,” Amirudin said.
In Telok Panglima Garang, 124 pupils from SK Telok Panglima Garang and 622 students from SMK Telok Panglima Garang receive food through the programme.
SMK Telok Panglima Garang headmistress Hanizam Kassim said NutriSel's implementation also positively affected student attendance.
“Since NutriSel was introduced, we have seen students becoming more diligent in coming to school because they receive free food twice a week.
“The number of recipients is certainly worthwhile and helps students in need,” she said.
NutriSel has been implemented simultaneously at 932 schools across the state since August 3, with free food provided every Monday and Thursday via a RM12.5 million allocation.
