PETALING JAYA, Aug 20 — Selangor Nutrition (NutriSel) helps students from the lower income group save money and access nutritious food to start their day, said Selangor State Education Department (JPNS) director Datin Wan Nor Ashikin Abu Kassim.
She added that NutriSel complements the Supplementary Food Programme (RMT), granting more students the opportunity to enjoy free meals before starting the school day.
“Breakfast is important because without it, they would struggle to absorb what they are learning.
“The children of Selangor are very fortunate, as it is not easy to secure a privilege like this,” she said when met after the symbolic handover ceremony for NutriSel at SK Taman Dato’ Harun 1 and SMK Taman Medan here today, officiated by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
Wan Nor Ashikin said the NutriSel rollout has gone smoothly thanks to good cooperation between schools and canteen operators.
SMK Taman Medan principal Lily Juliani Jaafar said NutriSel has been highly beneficial for her students.
“This programme greatly helps them save on meal expenses, as the food is sponsored by the state government.
“The meals provided are nutritious, with a rotating daily menu, and are well balanced as they are prepared by the school canteen,” she said.
Lily said at SMK Taman Medan, 336 students (morning and afternoon sessions, Forms 1 to 5), are benefiting from NutriSel, and 94 pupils at SK Taman Dato’ Harun 1 are enrolled in the initiative.
“Thank God, we are deeply honoured and grateful that this school was chosen to benefit from NutriSel. Our thanks go to the state government,” she said.
At the same event, Amirudin presented aid to both schools, with SK Taman Dato’ Harun 1 receiving RM25,000 to repair its science laboratory and SMK Taman Medan receiving RM50,000 to repair its classrooms.
