PETALING JAYA, Oct 2 — Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung has announced his resignation as an MP without any conditions, effective today.

He formally submitted his resignation letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul yesterday.

“My resignation takes effect today. I met Tan Sri yesterday and formally submitted my resignation letter.

“We met at 3pm yesterday to hand over my duties and as a mark of respect for our legislative institution,” he said during a special media conference at the Petaling Jaya Parliamentary Service Centre, which was also shared on his Facebook page.

Lee added that the Petaling Jaya Parliamentary Service Centre will remain open to serve the local community.

He will submit an official letter to leave Parti Keadilan Rakyat on Monday (October 5), while thanking the party for allowing him to serve.

“I am grateful to Keadilan for the opportunities over the past 18 years, and to my comrades who continue to believe in clean politics, institutional reform, and a Malaysia that celebrates diversity,” Lee said.

On Wednesday (September 30), he was informed that the party had suspended his membership for three years.

Meanwhile, Keadilan president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Lee had not attended party meetings or congresses for some time.

Lee, who resigned as the Petaling Jaya MP with immediate effect, had also not been involved in party affairs for about a year.

“So, it is only appropriate. If he is no longer interested, there is no issue. He can leave on good terms. Thank you for his contributions over the years.

“He has not been involved in party affairs for about a year, has not attended any party meetings and did not attend the congress either. So, there is no issue,” he told the media after inspecting the Royal Malaysian Air Force quarters in Sungai Besi today.

On Lee’s claim that allocations for Petaling Jaya had been withheld, Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the government always ensures the smooth implementation of development projects such as schools, surau, mosques, temples, and roads.

The Prime Minister noted that his resignation will not affect development projects in the area.

“He is entitled to his views, and we can accept them. But it is not true that development projects will come to a halt when an MP steps down,” he said.

When asked about possible legal action against Lee, Anwar said the matter has been referred to Keadilan secretary-general Datuk Fuziah Salleh and the party’s Legal Committee, which includes Sivarasa Rasiah.
