State govt expedites resolution of Desa Temuan Orang Asli land issue

SHAH ALAM, Sept 30 — Selangor is accelerating efforts to resolve the land and asset issues involving the Orang Asli community of Kampung Desa Temuan in Bukit Lanjan, which have persisted for nearly three decades since 1996.

State executive councillor for human resources, poverty eradication, and Orang Asli and minority affairs Papparaidu Veraman said the measures taken include obtaining detailed clarification from the Petaling District and Land Office on the status of the transfer of land and related assets to the state government before they are handed over for use by the Orang Asli community.

The matter was also discussed with MK Land Holdings Berhad and several relevant agencies to find a comprehensive solution.

“Following the discussions, we concluded that the issue of transferring land and assets to the Orang Asli, such as the hall, surau, museum, and so on, needs to be resolved.

“I have asked the Land Office to obtain more detailed information regarding the transfer of the land to us (the state government) so that we can gazette the area for the Orang Asli,” he told Media Selangor when contacted.

Previously, Papparaidu chaired a discussion with MK Land Holdings Berhad and relevant agencies to examine the land, asset and compensation issues involving the Orang Asli community of Kampung Desa Temuan.

Also present were Bukit Lanjan state assemblyman Pua Pei Ling, representatives from the Selangor State Legal Adviser’s Office, the Petaling District and Land Office, the Selangor Land and Mines Office, the Selangor and Federal Territories Orang Asli Development Department, and the State Economic Planning Unit.

Assets yet to be handed over in Damansara Perdana include the Balai Adat and Museum, the hall, nine shop lots, a field, a surau, and a cemetery, as well as issues involving the Desa Riang Damai area.

The compensation issue will also be reviewed based on previous documents and records to clarify the status of compensation handed over to the Orang Asli community.

Papparaidu added that the review is necessary following differences in understanding between MK Land and the Orang Asli community regarding the implementation and payment of the compensation.

“There has been some confusion between the two parties, so I have asked the relevant officers to obtain the documents to verify the amount of compensation that has been paid or whether there is still any outstanding balance.

“Without any written records, it is difficult for us to make a decision. That is why I have asked the officers to investigate the matter and submit the findings to me,” he said.

The councillor noted that resolving the issue is important to ensure that the rights and assets of the Orang Asli community are always protected and continue to receive due attention.
