SHAH ALAM, July 31 — The ageing water pipe replacement project in the Bukit Lanjan state constituency has reached nearly 80 per cent completion and is expected to be finished before Chinese New Year next year.
Its state assemblyman Pua Pei Ling said the RM40 million project, which commenced in October last year, involves replacing 37km of water pipes in Desa Jaya, Taman Ehsan, and Kepong Ulu.
"The 37km water pipe replacement project covering Desa Jaya, Taman Ehsan, and Kepong Ulu has now reached almost 80 per cent completion.
"Once the pipe replacement works are completed, road resurfacing will be carried out so that residents will not only benefit from new water pipes but also enjoy improved road conditions," she told Media Selangor.
Pua added that the project was undertaken to replace nearly 40-year-old pipes that have been prone to frequent leaks, particularly during peak water usage in the mornings and evenings.
These leaks have forced a reduction in water pressure to prevent recurring pipe bursts, affecting the water supply to residents and businesses.
"The installation of new pipes will allow water pressure to be increased without the frequent leakage problems.
"We hope that once this project is completed, the longstanding issue of low water pressure, which has persisted for decades, will finally be resolved, allowing residents to enjoy a more stable and cleaner water supply," she said.
Pua noted that the affected area comprises a mix of residential neighbourhoods, shop lots, markets, health clinics, and villages, all of which require higher water capacity and pressure to meet daily demand.
"This area requires greater water capacity and pressure to ensure the supply can meet the daily needs of residents, including commercial areas and public facilities," she said.
Almost all the main pipelines have already been installed, while work is currently focused on connecting the new pipes to individual household water meters before water pressure testing is carried out as part of the project's final phase.
The assemblyman said that the project, which benefits approximately 1,000 households and is being carried out by seven contractors, is among the largest pipe replacement projects ever undertaken in the state constituency.
Meanwhile, pipe replacement works will continue in Wangsa Permai and Selayang Utama once the current project is completed.
"Funding has already been approved for the pipe replacement works in Wangsa Permai and Selayang Utama.
"We are now only waiting for the necessary permits before work on site can begin. Both projects will be officially announced in the near future," Pua said.
