KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 — Selangor’s progress towards becoming a smart state is at 70 to 80 per cent, and the state is well on its way to achieving its smart state agenda by 2030, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He added that the accomplishment shows Selangor is on the right track in expanding its technology use and digitalisation from the city stage to a more comprehensive scale.
He said nearly every Selangor local council is at Level 1 in the smart city agenda implementation.
“If we look closely at changes done with the ambition to become a smart state by 2025, we will see that nearly all local councils have reached Level 1.
“Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) is moving towards Level 2, while Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) is the highest scorer as it has achieved Level 2 and could reach Level 3,” he said during the Smart Cities 2026 Seminar themed “AI Meets Urban Planning 2.0” at the KLGCC Convention Centre here today.
Amirudin added that the achievement allows Selangor to be regarded as transitioning towards smart state status as its smart city agenda is well underway.
“I believe Selangor could become the second state in Malaysia to become a smart state, maybe by the middle of next year or by the end of next year at the latest,” he said.
He said Selangor and the Klang Valley are highly prepared to receive digitalisation as part of the people’s life.
He explained that the people’s willingness to accept technology must be considered in smart urban planning so its implementation truly fulfils current needs.
“Plan execution must come from our understanding of the environment, our understanding of needs,” Amirudin said, adding that the use of technology including AI in urban planning shouldn’t just be a goal, but must be adapted to the environment and the people’s needs.
He said Selangor wants to expand the approach so it may become a smart state by 2030.
“This effort will be strengthened by making use of technology and AI in more efficient and hi-tech urban planning and development,” Amirudin added.
