SHAH ALAM, Nov 2 — Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari has called on authorities to ramp up the inspection and monitoring of slaughterhouses and chicken-processing facilities to ensure they comply with the rules, following reports a slaughterhouse in Puchong was using methods that violate halal standards.
Amirudin said halal certification bodies and local councils must collaborate to ensure consistent monitoring of such facilities.
“Raids have already been conducted, and it is only appropriate that firm action be taken, including prosecution, so we can take action in accordance with the law.
“Halal certification bodies and local authorities need to work together. Periodic inspections should be carried out to ensure that sensitive (facilities), such as slaughterhouses, operate in accordance with the required procedures and standards,” he told reporters after a symbolic handover ceremony for the Selangor Nutrition (Nutrisel) and Mega Nutrisel programmes at the Integrated Religious Primary School (SRAI) in Section 19 here today.
Amirudin urged people with information on these activities to lodge complaints so authorities may conduct investigations and monitoring.
Previously, media reports said that in a raid on a slaughterhouse in Puchong, the facility was found to have been performing electric water bath stunning on chickens before they were slaughtered.
During the raid, more than 6.5 tonnes of raw chicken were seized over suspicions that they had been processed using that method, which does not comply with halal certification standards.
Twelve Bangladeshi and Pakistani men were detained during the operation for their alleged involvement in the activity.
