SHAH ALAM, Sept 12 — Police have arrested a 57-year-old local man who allegedly rented a homestay in Taman Sri Andalas here to steal 70 gold bars worth about RM150,000 from a seller.
South Klang district police chief Lim Jit Huey said the suspect was arrested at a hotel in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday, after the incident occurred at about 10pm on Tuesday.
“The suspect had invited the complainant to the homestay he had rented for the purpose of buying gold. When the complainant handed over 70 gold bars to the suspect for inspection, the suspect entered a room with the gold bars and escaped through the rear passage of the house,” he said in a statement posted to Facebook.
During the arrest, police also seized the gold bars reported missing by the complainant.
“The suspect, who has seven prior criminal records, has been remanded for four days from September 10 to 13.
“The South Klang district police Criminal Investigation Division has opened an investigation paper under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a building, which carries a maximum imprisonment of 10 years and maybe a fine,” he added.
He also advised the public to be careful.
