SHAH ALAM, Sept 2 — A state lawmaker has called for safety audits to be carried out on all public recreational facilities under the Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS) following the death of a teenage boy who was believed to have been electrocuted at a futsal court in Bestari Jaya on August 31.
“We cannot wait for another life to be lost before action is taken. The safety of public facilities is a responsibility that must be carried out with full accountability,” Ijok assemblyman Jefri Mejan said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Jefri urged authorities to temporarily close the futsal court and surrounding recreational area until they are certified safe by the relevant authorities.
He also called for a comprehensive inspection of the electrical wiring, lighting, poles and other electrical facilities at the site, as well as a transparent report detailing the cause of the incident, maintenance records and parties responsible.
Yesterday, Kuala Selangor district police chief Supt Azaharudin Tajudin said 15-year-old Muhammad Anas Muazim Norramin died after he was believed to have suffered an electric shock while resting during a futsal game.
He said investigations found that the teenager had touched a lamp post suspected of carrying an electrical current, causing him to collapse.
An examination of the victim’s body found no signs of foul play, while the cause of death was recorded as “consistent with electrocution”.
The case is being investigated as a sudden death report (SDR).
Jefri urged the Selangor government and MPKS to conduct a thorough investigation into the case, saying the incident must be taken seriously to ensure the victim’s family receives due justice.
“I want the passing of the late Anas to receive the attention it deserves and for his family to obtain justice over the tragedy,” he said.
He also urged the relevant authorities to provide appropriate assistance and support to Anas’ family, while extending his condolences to them.
“I will continue to monitor developments in the case until the actual cause of the incident is established and appropriate action is taken,” he said.
