
SHAH ALAM, Aug 22 — The state contingent outperformed itself today as several swimmers won gold during the 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA) at Akuatik Selangor today.
Chong Yuan Yi continued the host contingent’s gold-medal momentum by winning the women’s 400-metre freestyle event.
The swimmer, who topped the second heat in the morning, stepped up her performance in the final this afternoon to secure another gold medal for Selangor.
She clocked 4:29.70s to win gold, while the silver medal went to Sarawak’s Kelly Yao Teo with a time of 4:33.52s, and Penang swimmer Rui Nee Tan took bronze in 4:34.06s.
Chong's victory added another gold medal to Selangor’s swimming haul, with the state’s swimmers continuing to excel at this year’s SUKMA.
Meanwhile, her colleague Shannon Tan continued to make waves by winning the women’s 100-metre butterfly gold medal.
The victory saw her fulfil expectations to emerge champion and claim her fifth individual gold medal at the Games.
Tan, who had already made headlines by winning four gold medals and breaking two SUKMA records, once again demonstrated her prowess by dominating the final.
She clocked 1:02.39s, while the silver medal went to Penang’s Yuet Ting Aw with a time of 1:02.98s. Perak’s Nadia Lim took bronze in 1:03.36s.
Tan's teammate Khor Yue Lynn also competed in the final, finishing fourth.
Her victory further cemented the dominance of Selangor’s swimming squad, which has continued to excel in front of the home crowd.
Similarly, Goh Li Hen kept up his performance by winning the men’s 100-metre butterfly gold medal.
The victory saw him claim his second individual gold medal at the Games, after winning the men’s 400-metre butterfly yesterday.
Goh lived up to expectations by topping the final with a time of 55.86 seconds, adding another gold medal to Selangor’s haul.
The Federal Territories' Muhammad Dhuha Zulfikry had to settle for silver with a time of 55.96 seconds, while Sarawak's Matthias Ming Zhi Liew took bronze with a time of 55.99 seconds.
Not to be outdone was Aslan Adnan, who contributed a bronze medal in the men’s 400-metre freestyle, clocking in at 4:08.96 to finish third in the race.
The gold medal went to the Federal Territories' Muhammad Dhuha Zulfikry, who posted the fastest time of 4:00.52, while Penang's Samuel Chong Weng Lai took silver with a time of 4:06.45.
