Two SUKMA golds leave Shannon hungry for world stage

SHAH ALAM, Aug 21 — Selangor swimmer Shannon Tan Yang-Qing has described winning two gold medals at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) as a proud achievement that has boosted her confidence for the challenges ahead.

Shannon said she was surprised and delighted by the achievement, and proud to have reached another major milestone at this year’s Games.

“I was very surprised and happy to win two gold medals.

“I’m very proud of myself for achieving something so significant,” she told Media Selangor after competing at the Selangor Aquatic Centre yesterday.

The young swimmer said the achievement would not have been possible without the support of her team, coaches and family.

“I’m very grateful to the team behind me for all their support.

“I wouldn’t have achieved these results without them, including the entire Selangor team, my coaches and my parents,” said Shannon, who won gold in the mixed 4x100m medley relay.

Shannon said her earlier gold-medal success had also given her greater confidence heading into her upcoming events.

She said the achievement had strengthened her belief in her own abilities and motivated her to deliver her best in the competitions ahead.

“It has made me more confident because I believe in myself more now, and I’m more motivated for my next event,” she said.

Looking beyond SUKMA, Shannon said she also dreams of competing on a bigger international stage, with qualification for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) among her goals.

“I’m also targeting the Youth Olympic Games and hope I can qualify,” she said.

Her two gold medals have provided further motivation for Shannon to continue improving her performance at SUKMA 2026.
