SHAH ALAM, Aug 16 — The Selangor contingent scored three gold and three silver in Day 2 of the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) today, with the athletics camp feeding the state’s medal tally with one gold and two silver.

Weightlifting also contributed a silver with Syaza Ilyana Maizan lifting 138kg overall to finish second in the women’s 53kg category.

In Bagan Lalang, Selangor’s road cycling squad has their eye on the podium, with Yap Qi Yi coming close to a medal by finishing the men’s individual 30km time test in fourth place. In the women’s individual 20km, Ell Reayanna Farhanie Mohd Farid and Mas Mia Tueta Dania Mazlan took sixth and ninth places, respectively.

Selangor’s medal hunt is far from over, as two female silat exponents, Nurul Saidatul Syafieqah Ibrahim and Nurlaili Batrisyia Qistina Mohamad Saifurizal, have progressed to their respective quarter finals in Classes A and B.

The biennial tournament was also made more colourful with stories and developments outside the courts, including venue preparations, the presence of spectators, contingents’ journeys, and the environment around competition venues. This not only made SUKMA merrier, but reflects Selangor’s sportsmanship as host.

Meanwhile, after a rather slow start in track competitions, the Selangor contingent finally scored their first athletics gold in the SUKMA women’s discus throw at UPM Stadium here today.

Sasha Alyssa Philip emerged champion with a 44.93m throw to defeat Perlis and Sarawak representatives.

The 17-year-old’s victory was made sweeter as it was her best personal record, which made up for her disappointment when settling for third place in Sarawak in 2024.

Supporters from all over the country also made the tournament livelier.

For Mohd Nasir Abdul Rahim, 37, from Tawau, Sabah, the long journey he made with his family was worth it as they got to support his brother — a long jump participant.

He said he travelled with eight adults and six children from Tawau and Sandakan to Selangor yesterday morning on a flight from the Land Below the Breeze.
