SHAH ALAM, July 27 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has allocated RM8 million to upgrade five public parks in Damansara Damai to improve basic amenities and visitor safety.
Petaling Jaya mayor Dato' Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the projects will be carried out in phases due to the high development cost.
"We will focus on basic facilities such as jogging tracks, children's playgrounds and gazebos," he said after officiating the reopening of Taman Damai Setia in Jalan PJU 10/1, as reported by The Star.
The 3.4ha park underwent a 20-week upgrade costing RM660,000, which included improvements to the parking area, the installation of new benches and landscaping.
To enhance security, MBPJ will install two closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras within the park.
Zahri said the CCTV footage would be used to assist police investigations, as well as monitor vandalism and illegal dumping.
He added that compound notices would be issued to those found committing such offences.
On a separate matter, Zahri urged traders at the Jalan 223 food court to remain patient while flood mitigation works in the area are being completed.
He said the existing drainage system, built in the late 1970s and early 1980s, was designed to handle about 20mm of rainfall, compared with up to 60mm today.
He added that MBPJ is in the process of appointing a contractor to upgrade the drainage system.
On July 23, Media Selangor reported that 54 traders at Medan Selera 223 in Section 51A, Petaling Jaya, affected by the recent flash floods, would receive a one-month rental waiver from MBPJ.
Zahri also said the council would provide a 30 per cent rental discount for all affected traders for six months, from July to December.
