SHAH ALAM, July 23 — Fifty-four traders at Medan Selera 223 in Section 51A, Petaling Jaya, who were affected by flash floods last week will be exempt from a month’s rent, said Petaling Jaya Mayor Dato’ Mohamad Zahri Samingon.
He said the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has also activated a 30 per cent discount on rent for six months, effective July to December.
“For the flash flood incident before this, we gave an exemption of two months’ rent to traders involved, and this time we’re giving them an exemption of a month’s rent to ease their burden.
“The traders are also receiving a decrease in rent of 30 per cent from July to December, with cleanup works done by MBPJ,” he told a press conference here today.
Earlier, he delivered a briefing with state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim about flood mitigation plans for Petaling Jaya here.
Zahri added that MBPJ has installed detectors in drains around Medan Selera 223 to monitor water levels during prolonged heavy rain.
He also said MBPJ has held three engagement sessions with traders to ensure they understand the situation.
“Drains in the area can catch rainfall of only 20mm, but the rain that fell then was 60mm,” he explained.
Last week, Medan Selera 223 was hit by flash floods a third time, after similar incidents in April and May.
MBPJ previously said the disaster stems from heavy downpours of over 60mm in a short period from upstream Kuala Lumpur.
The extraordinary rainfall caused Sungai Penchala to overflow and Sungai Klang to backflow.
