SHAH ALAM, July 31 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has allocated RM4.28 million to upgrade the MBPJ Hockey Stadium in preparation for hosting the women's hockey competition during the 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA), which will take place from August 15 to August 24.
Petaling Jaya Mayor Dato' Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the project includes installing a new artificial turf pitch that meets international standards, following the stadium's Category One certification from the International Hockey Federation.
The venue's floodlighting system has also been upgraded to deliver up to 2,400 lux of illumination, meeting the requirements for hosting top-tier tournaments.
"In addition, MBPJ has upgraded the athletes' changing rooms, signage, and surau, as well as constructed a new storage facility to improve the comfort of players and officials," he told Media Selangor.
Zahri added that parking facilities have also been expanded with the addition of 20 car parking bays and 20 motorcycle parking bays to accommodate visitors.
The stadium, which can accommodate up to 500 spectators, has also been enhanced with interactive murals featuring the faces of national hockey legends and the history of the Mayor's Cup, in recognition of the sport's development.
He said that the project demonstrates MBPJ's commitment to supporting the development of sport in Malaysia.
"I hope this initiative will make the MBPJ Hockey Stadium a proud sporting landmark in Petaling Jaya," Zahri said.
SUKMA 2026 will feature 469 events across 37 sports in nine districts, involving 52 venues throughout Selangor during the Games.
Meanwhile, the Para SUKMA will take place from September 5 to September 14, featuring 369 events across 10 sports: swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis, tenpin bowling, lawn bowls, archery, chess, boccia, and powerlifting.
