SHAH ALAM, June 20 — Electric vehicles (EVs) should make up the Selangor government’s official fleet to reduce fuel costs and lower dependence on fossil fuels amid the global energy crisis, said Seri Serdang assemblyman Abbas Salimmi Adzmi.
He added that transitioning to petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles to EVs presents long-term benefits to the government following the impact of the West Asia conflict on world energy markets.
“If possible, EV use (should be) expanded to the state government’s official vehicles. Besides lowering fuel costs, it could also help reduce air pollution.
“Every (cloud has a silver lining). Maybe it is time to move to greener technology instead of continuing to depend on current fuel sources,” he said when debating Phase 2 of the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package (SREP) during a special Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here yesterday.
He said using EVs won’t just save on costs, but also support Selangor’s aspiration towards becoming a more sustainable and resilient state.
Abbas, who is also Selangor contingent head for the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) 2026, also suggested EVs be used as the contingent’s official vehicles to reduce fuel consumption.

Besides the transport sector, Abbas said efforts to rely less on conventional energy sources could be strengthened by installing solar panels at houses of worship, which could reduce utility costs and raise community awareness on the importance of renewable energy and climate action.
He also said SREP is a comprehensive approach that considers the needs of various segments of the community and addresses cost of living challenges and economic uncertainties.
He added that the package not only emphasises welfare aid and food security, but encompassess initiatives in education, housing, economic development and community well-being to ensure no one is left behind.
Yesterday, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced 15 initiatives under the RM209.26 million SREP Phase 2, aimed at addressing impacts from the West Asia conflict.
This is in addition to the RM145.8 million allocated for SREP Phase 1, for a total of RM355.06 million.
