EV transition: Selangor starts pilot projects for buses, waste compactors

SHAH ALAM, May 5 — Selangor is easing its way into electric vehicle (EV) adoption with pilot projects as it eyes a complete transition to electrified public transport services and government fleets, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He added that the state is executing proof-of-concept (POC) initiatives involving EV buses and trash compactors.

“This is only part of the transition. We already have pilot projects with several companies and local authorities,” he said after the launch of Malaysia’s first Autotronics Electric Vehicle (EV) and Solar System Competence Centre here last night.

He also noted that some local councils have switched out public buses and trash compactors for EVs.

Amirudin said the shift to EV must be guided by practicality and sustainability, adding that the state is carefully testing preparedness, including charging infrastructure and fleet scheduling, before scaling up.

“If everything goes well in terms of cost efficiency and sustainability, because sustainability is very important, then we can proceed with a wider transition.

“We are implementing POCs so (the endeavour) can be tested. If it succeeds, then there will be a major transition in public transport and waste management vehicles.”

On infrastructure, Amirudin said charging facilities are being integrated into transport providers and logistics players to ensure seamless EV adoption, and that the state would keep engaging with local authorities to refine approaches, including in addressing first- and last-mile connectivity gaps for public transport.

On April 27, state executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han said Selangor would standardise approvals across local councils to accelerate the rollout of EV charging facilities, amid strong demand but uneven supply that has slowed implementation.

He said there are 1,090 units of EV charging bays statewide, with Selangor aiming to install 4,000 charging bays by 2030. The state has also required EV charging facilities to be included in new developments.
