SHAH ALAM, June 13 — Demolition work on the illegally constructed multi-storey residences at a Rohingya settlement in Sungai Tekali, Hulu Langat began today.
Dusun Tua state assemblyman Datuk Johan Abd Aziz said the process started with the demolition of structures in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau.
He said demolition work was being carried out by the landowner at the site.
“It is similar to that four-storey flat-like building, but the landowner is starting from the back first,” he said today, as reported by Harian Metro.
Johan said the demolition work in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau is being carried out using an excavator. However, he said the use of only one excavator is not sufficient to speed up the overall demolition process.
He added that the RM600,000 allocation proposed for the demolition has not yet been approved by the state government.
“We planned to request funding from the state government, but before the allocation could be approved, the landowner has already started the demolition.
“That is what I emphasised, that the landowner must take responsibility,” he said.
Earlier, Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan clarified that the estimated RM600,000 cost for demolishing the illegally built four-storey flat-like structure in the remote Sungai Tekali area did not come from him.
Instead, he said the cost estimate was the outcome of a District Action Committee meeting chaired by the Hulu Langat District Officer to assess the need for the demolition.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported Sany as saying that the demolition of the illegal structures in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau is expected to take two weeks.
He said the process began at the back of the area, involving structures built on government reserve land and a portion of private land.
However, he said the multi-storey building that went viral on social media will not be demolished for the time being as it was built entirely on private land.
"I have been informed that the landowner needs two weeks to demolish the single-story structures at the back, and not the building rumoured to be a multi-story flat or apartment that went viral previously."
A survey by Bernama at the location found that the landowner had begun demolishing part of the building structures at the settlement starting at 9am, utilising two workers and an excavator.
