MB: Economic package's second phase to safeguard jobs, uphold dignified economy

JOHOR BAHRU, May 17 — The second phase of the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package, currently being drafted by the state government, aims to ensure the industrial sector continues operating and that people do not lose their jobs amid global economic uncertainty.

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the measure is important to prevent people from becoming desperate due to the loss of income, which could affect their well-being and livelihoods.

“During the previous pandemic (COVID-19), the economy was unstable. Overseas, when such uncertain crises occur, job opportunities disappear. Some people were even forced to sell their bodies.

“We want to avoid such situations, that is why we want to protect all industries so workers are not affected. To preserve economic dignity means people must work, not resort to robbery or theft. That is why we must work together.

“We will finalise a package to revive industries so people can work with dignity. The retail, services, and manufacturing sectors must continue operating so the people can continue earning a living,” he said during the Jerayawara Siswa Kita Selangor Southern Zone programme at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia yesterday.

Amirudin added that a nation’s success should not only be measured by physical development and economic progress, but also by the people’s sense of dignity, resilience, and inner strength.

“We do not only want to progress physically and intellectually, but also in spirit and soul,” he said.

On April 16, the Menteri Besar announced the RM131 million Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package to help the people and industries in the state cope with the impact of the increasingly challenging global energy supply crisis following tensions in West Asia.

Its initiatives are scheduled to be implemented starting next month as part of the first phase aimed at strengthening food supply and controlling inflation caused by the West Asian conflict.

On May 8, state executive councillor for investment, trade, and mobility Ng Sze Han announced that the state government had begun engagement sessions with affected industry players to formulate more targeted assistance.

Invest Selangor Bhd has also been conducting a series of discussions with chambers of commerce and trade bodies to identify the best solutions for all industrial sectors.
