Fewer SPM absentees this year, MBI says outreach initiative effective

SHAH ALAM, April 1 — Support from Yayasan Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI, for District Education Offices (PPDs) last year to reach out to students at risk of dropping out, led to fewer Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) dropouts last year.

Yayasan MBI chief Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor said that under the initiative, the foundation encouraged students with poor attendance records to go back to school, including by visiting their families and channelling aid in the form of food baskets.

“In 2024, the number of students who didn’t sit the exam was quite high, around 1,200, but this year, only 904 were absent. This proves that the programme of reaching out to students with PPDs was effective.

“(Based on) school data, PPD (officers) went door-to-door to reach out to students and their families. Thanks to the persuasion and encouragement from PPDs and Yayasan MBI’s aid and support, we have managed to reduce the number of SPM absentees,” Azri told Media Selangor.

He added that the initiative also aims to ensure students don’t drop out of school so their future is surer.

Earlier, he said the state administration’s Selangor People’s Tuition Programme (PTRS) helped boost SPM 2025 results, with the state’s average grade improving to 4.52.

Azri said the improvement reflects the effectiveness of the free classes offered to Form Five students last year.
