SHAH ALAM, Feb 8 — The preparations for hosting the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 in Selangor have shown encouraging progress, with venue upgrading works reaching about 80 per cent to date.

State executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said that all repair and upgrading works are proceeding according to the plans set by the organising secretariat.

All competition venues involved are expected to be fully completed by May at the latest, ahead of the Games, which are scheduled to run from August 15 to August 24.

“I have been informed by the secretariat that all SUKMA preparations are progressing well and are on track, including the upgrading works at the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre and the Subang Shooting Range, which are among the two main locations and major facilities currently being upgraded.

“The estimate is close to 80 per cent, and the upgrading works for all venues can be completed as early as May,” he told the media after the launch of the SUKMA and PARA SUKMA 2026 Volunteer Programme at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam today.

The event was officiated by Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari and was also attended by SUKMA 2026 Secretariat Dato' Mohd Yazid Sairi and Shah Alam Mayor Dato' Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim.

In another development, Najwan said the Selangor contingent is targeting about 80 gold medals at SUKMA 2026, in addition to aiming for the overall championship title.

Previously, the Selangor Sports Council's executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi said that state athletes are being targeted to emerge as champions in 15 to 20 per cent of the total 474 events contested across 37 sports.

Swimming is expected to be a major source of gold medals, alongside similar medal contributions targeted from athletics, shooting, and cycling.

During the SUKMA 2024 Games in Sarawak, Selangor exceeded its target by finishing within the top three, collecting 181 medals comprising 56 gold, 64 silver, and 61 bronze.

Pada temasya SUKMA 2024 di Sarawak, Selangor berjaya melepasi sasaran menduduki tempat tiga teratas dengan kutipan 181 pingat iaitu 56 emas, 64 perak dan 61 gangsa.

The 22nd edition of SUKMA will commence with the opening ceremony at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC), while the Selangor PARA SUKMA will run from September 5 to September 10.

474 events across 37 sports will be contested in nine districts, at 52 competition venues, while PARA SUKMA will feature 10 sports and 316 events in the Petaling and Klang districts.
