SHAH ALAM, June 18 — Brunei Darussalam has confirmed that it will send a contingent to participate in the 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 in Selangor, which will take place in August.
State executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said this was conveyed to him during his courtesy visit to Brunei's Culture, Youth, and Sports Minister Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary Pengiran Mustapha in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, today.
“Brunei has agreed to send a number of its athletes to the Selangor SUKMA as a symbol of the close friendship between our nations and in support of efforts to develop young athletes in both countries in general.
“I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Pengiran Shamhary for supporting us and completing the participation of 15 contingents at this year’s Selangor SUKMA,” he said in a statement.
Also present during the courtesy visit were Selangor SUKMA and Para SUKMA Secretariat chief executive officer Dato' Mohd Yazid Sairi and chief operating officer Mohamad Nizam Marjugi.
Brunei won one gold medal in wushu during the 2024 SUKMA in Sarawak. During the 2022 edition in Kuala Lumpur, the contingent concluded its campaign with two silver and two bronze medals.
Meanwhile, Najwan said that Brunei's participation as an invited contingent will help raise the standard of the competition, strengthen friendship and regional cooperation, and further foster the spirit of goodwill that has long existed between both sides.
A total of 469 events across 37 sports will be contested at the SUKMA 2026 from August 15 to August 24, while the Para SUKMA will feature 10 sports and nearly 300 events from September 5 to September 10.
A total of 52 venues across nine districts will be utilised, involving 12 local authorities, public and private higher education institutions, government and private agencies, and the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.
