SHAH ALAM, Aug 25 — After Selangor was crowned the champions of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) last night, the state government’s attention has now turned to the Para SUKMA athletes, who will compete starting on September 5.

State Executive Councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said the success of winning the title at the country’s biggest sporting event will serve as a morale boost for disabled athletes to achieve victory for the first time.

“We will focus on Para SUKMA because our target is that if we become overall champions of SUKMA, we also want to become Para SUKMA champions. This is my challenge to the para athletes.

“The State Sports Council will double its efforts and intensify training for all athletes. InsyaAllah (God willing), we hope our athletes’ performance will be on par with the SUKMA athletes.

"All the facilities and amenities used for SUKMA will be made available to them,” he said after the closing ceremony of SUKMA 2026 last night.

Para SUKMA, which runs from September 5 to September 10, features 369 events across 10 sports: swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis, ten-pin bowling, lawn bowls, archery, chess, boccia, and powerlifting.

Meanwhile, Mohd Najwan said training for para athletes will continue to ensure they maintain peak performance and can defend the SUKMA title during the 2028 Games in Kelantan.

“After this, we will follow up with development programmes to prepare the athletes for the 23rd SUKMA. Winning 101 gold medals this time is not an ordinary achievement.

"This is a very good figure and, InsyaAllah, we will try to maintain it and begin preparations as soon as possible,” he said.

Selangor was crowned overall champion of SUKMA 2026 last night after 11 days of fierce competition for 368 gold medals.

The achievement saw the state claim the overall title for the 10th time after collecting 245 medals, comprising 101 gold, 73 silver, and 71 bronze.

The Federal Territories finished second with 51 gold, 54 silver and 52 bronze, while Terengganu came third with 43 gold, 44 silver and 36 bronze.
