Selangor Para SUKMA athletes enter final push for glory

SHAH ALAM, Aug 26 — Selangor athletes set to compete at the 2026 Para Malaysia Games (SUKMA) began intensive training yesterday as they enter the final stretch before the Games begin on September 5.

Selangor State Sports Council (MSN) executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi said the training was aimed at ensuring all athletes remain on track in the state’s bid to capture the overall title for the first time.

“Their preparations are essentially the same as those of our SUKMA athletes and have been progressing in parallel. God-willing, within the period we have set, we expect them to achieve the same kind of success as our SUKMA contingent.

“For these two weeks, we are putting them through intensive training. We hope this will help maintain their performance momentum and enable them to win as many medals as possible,” he told Media Selangor.

Mohamad Nizam hoped all athletes would deliver strong performances and remain focused, adding that Selangor is looking to swimming and aquatic events as potential gold medal hunting grounds.

Para SUKMA, which runs from September 5 to 10, will feature 369 events across 10 sports — swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis, tenpin bowling, lawn bowls, archery, chess, boccia and powerlifting.

A total of 258 athletes and officials will represent Selangor at the biennial Games.

On Monday night, state executive councillor for sports development Mohd Najwa Halimi said the state was now turning its full attention to its Para SUKMA contingent after being crowned champions of SUKMA 2026.

He said MSN Selangor would intensify preparations and training for all athletes, while the facilities used for SUKMA would also be made available to the Para SUKMA contingent.
