GOMBAK, Jan 14 — KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) has taken the initiative to clear construction and industrial waste indiscriminately disposed at the Taman Wangsa Permai Fasa 2 domestic waste site in Kepong, even though the task is outside the agency’s daily scope of duty.

KDEBWM senior supervisor for the Selayang area Azhari Mat Arif said the move aimed to ensure the neighbourhood remains clean and orderly, and to prevent protracted illegal dumping.

“There are three affected locations — Jalan Wangsa 2/6, Jalan Wangsa 3/7, and Jalan Wangsa 3/8. Domestic waste collection is done every day, while bulk waste is collected twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Our collection scope is only for domestic and bulk waste, not for construction and industrial waste.

“However, to keep the area clean, sometimes we help collect indiscriminately disposed construction and industrial waste, Azhari said after a site visit with Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) Zone 33 councillor Tan Teong Guan today.

Azhari also said cleanliness is a shared responsibility and isn’t solely dependent on KDEBWM or local authorities.

“Public awareness is important. Indiscriminate dumping is uncivilised and should be avoided,” he added.

Meanwhile, Tan said MPS has suggested providing around 60 waste bins for traders around Taman Wangsa Permai Fasa 2 to address illegal dumping.

He added that the area is polluted with domestic, bulk and construction waste from certain individuals’ irresponsible actions.

Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari ordered district offices to give focus to illegal dumping and finalise solutions.

In December, the state government ordered local councils to collect data on illegal dumping hotspots, following a rebuke by Sultan of Selangor sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj about public cleanliness.

The Ruler said immediate moves are needed to clean up the state, and highlighted how the people are increasingly concerned about urban cleanliness.
