Rope, hands, stories

SHAH ALAM, Dec 27 — Fibre art makes use of fibres, ropes, and textile materials as its primary medium. Requiring meticulous knotting and wrapping techniques, this art form weaves elements of tradition into every knot.

One branch of fibre art is macramé, which employs rope-knotting techniques to create patterns and structures, without the use of needles, thread, or machines.

Macramé pieces are produced entirely by hand-knotting, using various types of knots, including square knots, spiral knots, and half knots.

Amid the revival of this fibre art, the workshop Nurtureknots has emerged as a creative space that preserves and revitalises macramé in a modern context.

Photojournalist Mohd Khairul Helmy Mohd Din captured the craft-making process, demonstrating that local products continue to hold their own value, stories and distinctive creativity.
