SHAH ALAM, Dec 17 — KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) is holding talks with local councils to improve waste management following a rebuke from Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj over cleanliness in the state.

KDEBWM managing director Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir said the concessionaire will assess existing systems to identify weaknesses that need fixing so solid waste management is more systematic and efficient.

“We will look into whether certain parties haven’t received our focus. Sometimes, some things happen outside our control, like littering and floods.

“KDEBWM is holding discussions with local councils to increase waste management frequencies, maybe to once a day in commercial areas,” he said when met after the Mesra Rewards Redemption Campaign gift presentation ceremony here today.

Ramli said garbage accumulates when waste is dumped outside scheduled collection times, which leads to disorganised mess in certain areas.

“In commercial areas there will definitely be accumulated garbage after shops close at night. When they see the mess the next day, the community will submit complaints,” he added.

Previously, Bernama reported that Sultan Sharafuddin received many complaints about Selangor’s lack of cleanliness, with the Ruler ordering immediate action.

His Royal Highness said there was a clear rise in credible complaints, which shows that the people are truly concerned about urban cleanliness and are demanding follow-up action.

The state government then gave local councils a week to submit data on illegal dumping hotspots.

State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said the order was decided at a special meeting he chaired on Monday with representatives from local councils, KDEBWM, Public Works Department (JKR), Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), and relevant units.

Ng said immediate actions involve upping monitoring frequency at hotspots and coordinating work schedules to ensure public complaints can be addressed more effectively.
