PETALING JAYA, Dec 14 — Selangor has maintained its position as the top tourism destination in Malaysia, recording the highest number of visitors nationwide for four consecutive years, said state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.
He said that in 2004, it recorded 34.5 million daily visitors, many of whom came for a short visit or “touch-and-go” trips.
“We want those who come to Selangor not just to visit for a day, but to stay overnight and spend in the state,” he said in his speech during the state-level Christmas celebration 2025 at 1Utama Shopping Centre today.
Ng added that as of the third quarter of 2025, Selangor has welcomed 6.4 million tourists, reaching 80 per cent of the eight million visitors targeted for the year.
As such, he is confident that the state will achieve its goal by the end of this year.
“I hope programmes like this Christmas celebration will continue next year with the involvement of the local authorities, districts, and various cultural partnerships which have become major attractions in Selangor,” Ng said.
The councillor noted that the state is preparing to host the Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2026, and that the sports tourism segment can become stronger next year with ongoing support from government agencies, the private sector, and the public.
Selangor will host the biannual games from August 15 to August 24 next year.
