Health, MICE, family entertainment to drive high-value tourism in Selangor

SHAH ALAM, Oct 16 — Selangor is locking on three strategic cores under the Selangor Tourism Master Plan 2026-2030 to encourage visitors to spend and extend their stays in the state, said state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.

He said these cores are health tourism, family entertainment, and the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) sector.

He added that this push would boost the high-value tourism industry, drive economic activity and open more doors for local businesses.

“We hope that through these three main cores, (we) can attract tourists to Selangor, not just by driving through but with deeper tourism promotions in various interesting places.

“(This) is so their trip to Selangor doesn’t end in one evening, but so they stay longer and experience Selangor on a deeper level,” he said when contacted by Media Selangor.

Ng also said the sector’s growth would also benefit petty traders, not just hotels and malls.

On the RM40 million allocated for the master plan, he said cost estimates were proposed by agencies including Tourism Selangor based on certain targets.

“Besides state government allocations, we will also apply for government-linked departments’ funding, and pursue tourism development based on resources obtained,” he added.

Besides financial constraints, he said geopolitical and economic uncertainties were identified as major challenges that could affect the tourism industry.

“Amid the (slow) economy, people will cut spending on tourism first to manage living (cost) pressures,” Ng said.
