SHAH ALAM, Nov 21 — The state government will introduce a sustainability fee for tourists starting January 1, 2026, in line with similar initiatives implemented in other states.
State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said the fee will not be burdensome and is aimed at supporting environmental sustainability and preserving the state’s natural and cultural assets.
“Other states have their own charges. Melaka has its heritage fee, Penang has a similar system, Pahang, Langkawi (Kedah), Perak, and even Negeri Sembilan have implemented theirs recently.
“It is time for Selangor to take a similar step,” he said in his winding-up speech during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly session today.
Ng added that the fee will apply to all visitors to the state, with hotels acting as intermediaries for collection and local authorities managing coordination, collection, and administration of the fund.
The initial discussion structure for the fees are RM7 per night for five-star hotels, RM5 for three-star accommodations, RM3 for other hotels, and RM2 for homestays and similar lodgings.
Although the amount had not yet been finalised, he said it would be at an affordable, reasonable rate.
The collected funds will be placed in a dedicated sustainability fund chaired by State Secretary Dato’ Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin.
Ng noted that the fund will support the tourism industry, infrastructure projects, and initiatives to preserve the environment for the benefit of Selangor residents.
The initiative reflects Selangor’s commitment to balancing tourism growth with ecological responsibility.
