State moots coordination agency to direct Greater Klang Valley development

SHAH ALAM, Aug 12 — The Selangor government has proposed setting up the Selangor Metropolitan Corporation (SMC) to coordinate development across local council boundaries under the Selangor Greater Klang Valley (SGKV) initiative, said state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.

“The proposal has been submitted to the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) and is being reviewed by the ministry and relevant federal agencies, particularly from the legal, governance and execution aspects.

“Once the (review) is complete, the Selangor Metropolitan Corporation Establishment Bill will be drafted and then tabled at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly according to prevailing legislative procedures,” he added.

Ng was responding to a question from Batu Tiga assemblyman Danial Al-Rashid Haron on SGKV’s progress at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

He said SMC would coordinate planning and initiatives involving multiple local authorities, especially in land-use planning, mobility, infrastructure, economic development, and public service delivery.

He explained that SMC won’t affect local authorities’ powers or functions as enshrined in the Local Government Act 1976.

Ng said the SMC is one of two key components that support SGKV, alongside the SGKV Blueprint 2035, which will be completed soon.

The blueprint will direct the execution of the state’s metropolitan development agenda under the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2).

“SGKV … would ultimately provide a more coordinated approach to development across Selangor, especially for matters that extend beyond the boundaries of individual local authorities,” Ng said.
