SHAH ALAM, Nov 17 — Pelabuhan Klang assemblyman Azmizam Zaman Huri today urged the state government to upgrade main port-access roads and provide safer infrastructure for workers.
He said the proposed upgrade of the roads, which carry up to 80,000 vehicles daily, should include dedicated motorcycle lanes and rest stops.
“These roads now handle nearly 70,000 to 80,000 vehicles daily,” he said at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting today, also calling for urgent improvements to accommodate rising traffic and transshipment activities.
“I hope the state government takes this seriously by constructing dedicated motorcycle lanes along the Pulau Indah and Northport roads, and providing rest stops for gig economy riders delivering goods,” he said.
During his debate on the 2026 Selangor Budget, Azmizam proposed reviewing road durability, pointing out frequent damage to heavily used highways.
“We must decide whether to pay slightly more for longer-lasting roads, which could lower maintenance costs in the long run,” he said.
Azmizam also cited the port’s economic contribution, describing its potential to continue to be a main driver of Selangor’s economy.
Last year, he said, Westports handled 10.98 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), and, combined with Northport, the port managed 14.64 million TEUs — a 41 per cent growth from 2023.
He said this growth has put pressure on road networks linking Westport and Northport.
Meanwhile, he welcomed initiatives under the state budget that focus on efficiency and technology, such as the Integrated Assessment Tax Arrears Matching and Checking System (I-GATE), which integrates local councils’ tax assessment systems.
“These measures will streamline processes and support local development in port and industrial areas,” Azmizam said.
