SHAH ALAM, April 21 — The hosting of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 has the potential to stimulate local economic activity and boost tourism, a state lawmaker said today following a call by the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj to postpone the event amid global uncertainties.

Port Klang state assemblyman Azmizam Zaman Huri said that while he acknowledges the Ruler’s concern, SUKMA is not only a national sporting event but also an important platform that contributes to broader socio-economic benefits for the host state.

"The games could generate increased activity in sectors such as tourism, services, and local businesses, while also strengthening national unity through the participation of athletes from across the country," he said when debating the royal address during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly today.

Yesterday, when opening the fourth session of the 15th State Legislative Assembly, His Royal Highness suggested that SUKMA be postponed in light of current economic conditions and the need to prioritise the welfare of the people.

The Ruler proposed that the biennial be considered only for organisation once the crisis in West Asia is resolved and work on the new Shah Alam Stadium is complete.

Azmizam added that the Sultan’s remarks were presented as a view for consideration rather than a directive.

He opined that SUKMA is not merely a sporting event but forms the foundation of the nation’s athlete development.

"Any decision on whether to proceed with or postpone the games must take into account the interests of multiple stakeholders, including athletes, organisers and the wider public,” Azmizam said.

SUKMA plays a crucial role in identifying and nurturing young athletes, particularly those under 21, who rely on the event as a stepping stone to higher-level competitions.

“Without a platform such as SUKMA, the chain of athlete development will be affected, and this will have a direct impact on the country’s sporting performance at the international level,” he said.

Azmizam is also concerned about athletes approaching the age limit for participation, noting that a postponement could deny them their final opportunity to compete despite years of preparation.

Should the government proceed with postponing the games, it should consider increasing the athletes’ age limit to 23 or 24 to allow those who miss this year’s edition to participate.

He said the state government has already taken steps to reduce the cost of hosting the event, with the estimated budget lowered from RM200 million to RM100 million, while sponsorship support is also being explored.

"The event should be viewed as a national agenda. I propose that the federal government, through the Youth and Sports Ministry, consider providing financial support to help ease the burden on the state,” Azmizam said.
