SHAH ALAM, Oct 6 — Selangor is sharpening its focus on medical tourism as part of its healthcare strategy, with Selgate Corporation’s specialist hospitals highlighted as an example of how the state is expanding beyond basic community healthcare.

State executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said Selgate’s model is designed to serve people across all stages of life, while strengthening Selangor’s position as Malaysia’s medical tourism hub.

“Even before our specialist hospitals, we established the Selcare brand, which today operates ISO-certified clinics, dental practices, pharmacies, diagnostics, nursing and rehabilitation services.

“These are further strengthened by our digital health platform SELangkah, with electronic medical records for seamless connectivity. With our hospitals now at the core, this integrated model delivers accessible, continuous, and higher-quality care across Selangor,” she told Media Selangor.

The development of state-backed private hospitals is in line with Selangor’s vision to diversify its economy through healthcare and property investment, while solidifying its role as a regional medical tourism hub.

To date, two Selgate specialist hospitals have been completed — a 224-bed facility in Rawang and a 121-bed centre in Sepang — and are expected to be opened to the public soon.

Selgate also operates 11 general medical clinics, two dental clinics, two pharmacies, one diagnostic laboratory, and a 24-hour call centre.

“Looking ahead, we are working on strategic plans with key agencies, including Tourism Selangor, Invest Selangor Bhd, and Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), to position healthcare as part of the state’s broader tourism and economic agenda.

“By aligning world-class medical services with Selangor’s appeal as a destination for holidays, business and lifestyle, we aim to strengthen the state’s profile as a trusted and competitive hub for medical tourism,” Jamaliah said.

Balancing local care, medical tourism

She added that Selgate, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) that serves as the state’s healthcare investment and management arm, aims to strike a balance between serving locals and attracting international patients.

Its commitment to Selangor residents is anchored in Selcare, a network of community clinics, dental centres, and pharmacies that ensure quality, accessible and community-based healthcare.

At the same time, Selgate specialist hospitals are built to international standards and equipped with advanced technology and facilities, providing a comprehensive range of services including cardiology, orthopaedics, robotic surgery, bariatric procedures, eye care, diagnostics, rehabilitation, and post-natal care.

“This dual-approach allows us to serve the everyday needs of local communities while also positioning Selangor as a destination of choice for international patients seeking advanced medical care,” Jamaliah said.

To enhance the international patient experience, Selgate has integrated its services through the SELangkah digital platform, providing seamless access to medical records for continued care after treatment.

The company also offers concierge services and collaborates with tourism partners to create packages that combine healthcare with leisure and travel.

The councillor said Selgate is Malaysia’s only state-backed healthcare ecosystem that meets community needs while supporting Selangor’s long-term growth, with a unique model that aligns strongly with the state’s economic agenda.

“We work closely with the state government through the state executive councillor to deliver health and welfare programmes, and with Yayasan Selgate extending support to vulnerable groups,” she said.

According to Selgate’s website, in addition to its facilities in Rawang and Sepang, three more specialist hospitals are planned in Selangor over the coming years — in Setia Alam (2026), Kuala Selangor (2029), and Shah Alam (2029).

Selgate also intends to build hospitals in Ulu Tiram, Johor Bharu (2026), Balik Pulau, Penang (2028), and Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur (2030).
