SHAH ALAM, Nov 8 — Deepavali is more than a religious celebration; it is also an occasion to strengthen unity and harmony among Selangor’s multiracial communities.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the Festival of Lights also reflects the strength of a diverse society living together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and appreciation for different cultures.

“For the people of Selangor, Deepavali is also a celebration that strengthens unity, harmony, and our identity as a diverse community,” he said in his Deepavali message today.

The festival symbolises the triumph of light over darkness or evil, while encouraging people to make spiritual changes towards leading better lives.

Amirudin emphasised that the Indian community in Selangor continues to receive attention from the state government through various community empowerment programmes and initiatives.

“May this Festival of Lights bring strength, well-being, and love into our lives,” he said.

The Hindu community celebrates Deepavali today through various traditions, including decorating kolam, lighting oil lamps, performing religious ceremonies, and visiting family members and friends.

Meanwhile, the 2026 state-level Deepavali celebration is scheduled for Saturday (November 14) at Dataran Klang, also known as Padang Chetty, in Klang, from 6pm to 11.30pm.

Themed "Cahaya Perpaduan, Selangor Sejahtera", the celebration is open to people of all races to celebrate cultural diversity and strengthen ties within the community.
