Exco urges public to report suspicious chicken slaughterhouses

KLANG, Nov 5 — The public should report suspicious chicken slaughterhouses so authorities may open investigations and act against errant operators, said state executive councillor for rural development and unity Datuk Rizam Ismail.

He said users must get accurate information about the food products they buy to ensure those goods are safe and halal.

“Monitoring will be done from time to time, but we are banking on complaints from the public because with these complaints, authorities or the government can … enforce the law,” he said today when met at the Festive Season Maximum Price Scheme and Deepavali Madani Rahmah Sale launch at ST Rosyam Mart here.

Also present was Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) Selangor branch director Muhamad Hanif Asa’ari.

Previously, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) seized 6.5 tonnes of raw chicken valued at RM85,400, over suspicions the birds were not slaughtered according to halal standards, from a warehouse in Puchong.

Investigations revealed the slaughterhouse, which was slaughtering, processing and distributing chicken without a halal certificate, was stunning chickens in an electric water bath.

Initial checks revealed the voltage used was purportedly so high that the chickens were being shocked dead before they were slaughtered.
