SHAH ALAM, Nov 3 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered the acceleration of a flood mitigation project worth approximately RM500 million in Kampung Melayu Subang to address recurring floods in the area.

The project, involving both the federal and Selangor governments, has already been approved, but implementation must be expedited, particularly in areas that have experienced repeated flooding.

He said it includes river widening, constructing additional retention ponds, and other flood mitigation works, including river dredging, for which contracts had already been approved.

“I have asked for the project to be expedited; otherwise, there will be no immediate solution. My concern is that the area has been hit by floods two or three times, so measures must include river widening, additional retention ponds, and flood mitigation projects.

“About RM500 million has been approved in total. The question now is how we can speed up implementation,” Anwar told the media after visiting flood victims at the temporary relief centre (PPS) at Dewan Siantan, Kampung Melayu Subang today.

Also present were Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari, Sungai Buloh MP Datuk Seri Ramanan Ramakrishnan, and Kota Damansara state assemblyman Muhammad Izuan Ahmad Kasim.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister will request a comprehensive report on the overall status of the projects at the Selangor State Executive Council (MMKN) meeting this Friday (November 6) to assess progress and identify measures to accelerate their implementation.

“On Friday, the Menteri Besar will hold the MMKN meeting to obtain the latest updates on the projects. I will request a report,” he said.

Meanwhile, Anwar said additional assistance for flood victims would be distributed promptly through coordination with the state government.

“Assistance will be distributed before we leave; we will provide additional aid and assess each case individually. I will work with the Menteri Besar to determine how much will be contributed by the state government and how much by the federal government,” he said.

Flash floods hit Kampung Melayu Subang yesterday following heavy rain, with rainfall reaching 116.5mm in approximately one hour, causing the river to overflow into residential areas.

The incident affected 92 houses across four areas: Lorong Merbau (30), Jalan Cengal (seven), Jalan Resak (five), and Jalan Jati (50). Water levels in residential areas reportedly reached up to one metre.
