GHL Geopark balances conservation with development

AMPANG JAYA, Oct 28 — The development of Gombak-Hulu Langat (GHL) Geopark is balanced, with environmental conservation and local communities’ well-being taken into account, said state executive councillor for tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.

“Geopark development is a very unique journey. It is not just about preserving geological heritage, but also about balancing development, environmental conservation and the overall well-being of communities.

“The challenge of protecting natural treasures while meeting development demands is not an easy one.

“The development of GHL Geopark is driven by a spirit of cooperation among various stakeholders and local communities, who remain committed to its preservation,” he said at the GHL Geopark 2026 Reassessment Session, officiated by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari here, last night.

Ng added that effective documentation and storytelling are essential to conserving and protecting heritage, allowing the public to better appreciate its significance.

“In further strengthening efforts to promote the geopark’s heritage, various strategic collaborations have been established between Tourism Selangor and Canon Marketing Malaysia through a memorandum of collaboration (MOC).

“This reassessment session is expected to be an important step in ensuring GHL Geopark continues to grow as a sustainable, inclusive geopark model that benefits the community,” he said.

Recognised as a National Geopark in 2022, GHL Geopark spans more than 112,000ha across two District and Land Offices, three municipalities and 20 main geosites. It houses significant geological treasures, biodiversity, cultural heritage and historic spots.

The GHL Geopark reassessment exercise, which started Monday and ends Friday, is part of an assessment conducted every four years to determine whether it may retain its National Geopark status.

The panel is led by renowned geologist Felix Tongkul, with fellow experts Madeline George Pau and Fredolin Javino serving as observers.
