AMPANG JAYA, Oct 28 — The reassessment of the Gombak-Hulu Langat (GHL) Geopark is not merely about retaining its National Geopark status but also provides an opportunity to review its achievements, identify areas for improvement and strengthen its future development.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the assessment panel's views, findings and recommendations would serve as important guidance in ensuring the geopark continues to develop progressively, inclusively and sustainably.
"The reassessment taking place this week is not merely a process to retain our existing status. Rather, it is an opportunity for us to evaluate our achievements, identify areas for improvement and strengthen the direction of the geopark's development in the years ahead," he said.
He said this during the GHL Geopark 2026 Reassessment Session, which was also attended by state tourism executive councillor Datuk Ng Suee Lim, here last night.

Amirudin said GHL Geopark had also demonstrated that efforts to preserve natural heritage could contribute to local economic growth, community empowerment and improvements in people's quality of life.
He said the approach was in line with the Selangor government's aspirations to strengthen the geopark's international standing and eventually secure recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
"The approach adopted at this geopark also proves that heritage conservation is not an obstacle to development. Instead, it can serve as a catalyst for local economic growth, community empowerment and improvements in people's quality of life," he said.
He explained that various conservation, research, public education and tourism product development initiatives had been implemented over the past few years through collaboration between the Selangor government, ministries, local authorities, academic institutions, non-governmental organisations and local communities.

Amirudin also emphasised the importance of effective communication and promotion in showcasing GHL Geopark's unique attractions to both national and international audiences.
In this regard, he welcomed the strategic partnership between Tourism Selangor and Canon Marketing Malaysia through a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) to support documentation and promotional efforts using more creative, high-quality digital and visual content.
GHL Geopark, which was recognised as a National Geopark in 2022, covers more than 112,000 hectares, spanning two district and land offices, three local authorities and 20 major geosites.
The area is home to significant geological treasures, biodiversity, cultural heritage and historical assets that must be preserved and passed down to future generations.

The GHL Geopark reassessment, taking place from October 26 to 30, is part of a periodic evaluation conducted every four years to determine whether it qualifies to retain its National Geopark status.
The assessment is led by panel chairman Professor Emeritus Dr Felix Tongkul, with Madeline George Pau and Fredolin Javino serving as observers.
