SHAH ALAM, Oct 27 — Children as young as six were offered the opportunity to lead and understand democratic systems last Saturday at the inaugural Selangor Littles’ Sitting, said Batu Tiga assemblyman Danial Al-Rashid Haron.
He said the mock assembly gave children a platform to voice their views and expose them to leadership from a young age.
“Children must be given space to speak so they may present their views confidently,” he added.
With the slogan “Small Voice, Great Impact”, the sitting gathered primary and secondary school students aged six to 14 from across Selangor, who were chosen via interviews.
Danial said participants underwent three months of intensive training with mentors to acquire knowledge of debate, administration, laws, and community service. The results from that training were showcased at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) headquarters on Saturday.
The participants were dubbed “Yang Berkhidmat”.
Meanwhile, programme secretary siti Suhaili Sulaiman said the initiative aims to build children’s confidence to think, debate and hear others’ views, and allow them to experience an assembly sitting.
“(Their) achievements at the final sitting showed children’s potential when given meaningful training, trust and room to participate,” Suhaili said.
