SHAH ALAM, Sept 28 — The contractor of a shoplot construction project at Kapar Industrial Park has been ordered to close three access routes to the site and build a proper drainage system to prevent water from overflowing into Taman Seri Kerayong.
Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) Zone N43A councillor Aziz Khan Muhammed Ali said the directive was issued to prevent a recurrence of the incident that affected some 20 houses along Lorong 6 on Friday.
He added that the move also aimed to ensure the contractor provides its own drainage system within the project site without affecting the existing one.
“Yesterday (September 26), I issued a stern warning to the contractor. I told them that I do not want any more flooding issues after this. They took note and immediately closed the road and built a bund using red soil,” he told Media Selangor yesterday.
“I also told them not to reopen the road or remove the bund until the project is completed, and to build their own drainage system and monitor the situation. There was video evidence showing that yesterday’s overflow came from the project site.
“Based on the list given to me, about 20 houses were affected, with water clearly overflowing from the front, which came from the project site.”
Aziz said the MBDK Engineering Department is also aware of the incident and is expected to call the contractor to seek an explanation.
“MBDK is aware of the matter. The situation in the area is also under control after immediate action was taken, and there were no reports of flooding following the rain this morning.
“This area has flooded three times this year alone. But previously, it happened along the main access road. It was not caused by this incident, but we do not want residents to keep having to deal with flooding.
“Some houses also experienced water entering from the back, which involves a separate drainage issue.
“Yesterday, I met the Kapar Subdistrict head, who said the Land Office can provide compensation only once a year for flooding. So if this happens repeatedly, it will be the residents who suffer.”
Meanwhile, Taman Seri Kerayong Residents’ Association (KRT) chairman Salim Yasri Imran said residents hoped the contractor would build a proper drainage system to ensure flooding do not recur in the area.
He said affected residents have reported damage to furniture, household appliances and business goods after being inundated by floodwaters during several flooding incidents.
“Yesterday, the water had receded by 7.30pm, and there was no rise in water levels following this morning’s rain. Based on my list, 50 houses were affected.
“Some experienced water entering from the back, while others were affected by the overflow from the front due to the project yesterday. The drainage system in Taman Seri Kerayong is also currently being upgraded, so we do not want this project to become another contributor to flooding.”
Earlier, a flooding incident affecting houses in Taman Seri Kerayong went viral on social media, with residents suffering damage and losses to their property.
Residents claimed that meetings with MBDK and relevant parties had been held following previous flooding incidents, but had to deal with the same problem when flooding recurred.
