SHAH ALAM, Sept 15 — Malaysia welcomed 290.1 million domestic tourists in 2025, up 11.5 per cent from 2024, according to the Statistics Department (DOSM).
Of the total, Selangor accounted for 36.4 million travellers — the highest share.
According to DOSM, domestic tourism spending rose 13.6 per cent to RM121.3 billion last year.
“Based on domestic travel performance by state in 2025, Selangor recorded the highest number of domestic travellers at 36.4 million people, followed by Kuala Lumpur (35.1 million) and Perak (23.6 million),” it said in a statement today.
The department added that Selangor’s food and beverage receipts totalled the highest at RM2.5 billion, followed by Kuala Lumpur (RM2.3 billion) and Perak (RM1.6 billion).
Selangor also had the highest fuel spending collection at RM2.2 billion, followed by Kuala Lumpur (RM1.6 billion) and Pahang (RM1.4 billion).
“In the spending receipts component, shopping remained the main contributor to tourism collections in all states, including at the national level, at RM44.8 billion.
“At the state level, Kuala Lumpur took the lead with RM7.9 billion, followed by Selangor (RM6.7 billion) and Sarawak (RM3.6 billion),” it said.
In August, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari reportedly said Selangor logged 36.4 million domestic tourists last year; a 5.5 per cent increase from the previous year.
Amirudin said Visit Selangor Year 2025’s success informed the activation of Visit Selangor Year 2026, with a target of welcoming nine million tourists to the state.
